THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAINING AMBIDEXTERITY
THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAINING AMBIDEXTERITY
To become proficient in both stances, it is essential to include exercises in our training that develop coordination, balance and strength evenly on both sides of the body.
One possible exercise involves performing the 1 & 2 corner attack with a stick, incorporating a continuous change of guard, hip opening and follow-through, ideally with 1.5 kg wrist weights.
The ability to fight in both stances is a rare skill that is only achieved after years of hard work and sacrifice. Ambidexterity is also known to lead to better coordination, motor efficiency and adaptability. The aim is not to replace the dominant hand, but to prepare for any unexpected situation that might arise during a physical confrontation. Things do not always go to plan, so we must be prepared to adapt and fight with our non-dominant hand.
